We are about to be relocated to Minneapolis from Connecticut. We have 3 school age kids and would like to enroll them into public schools. Which school districts we should consider? We look for houses in a suburban community with a lot kids. We can afford up 800k. It appears that housing is substantially cheaper in MN than CT, although schools in CT are absolutely great. We heard MN schools are excellent, too.

The housing market here is WAY cheaper than CT. $800K + Public Schools = Edina, which is close to the city, full of blue-bloods and has great schools. Or save a little dough on the house and send them to Blake, Breck or St. Paul Academy. The only thing you won’t be able to get here for $800,000 is prime lake front.

I live in Maple Grove (not in the 800k arena) and the schools are good here. Here’s the kind of house you can get. It’s across the street from a gorgeous golf course.
Wayzata Schools in Plymouth/Wayzata are great.
Hopkins/Minnetonka is also a nice suburban area with really good schools.

Good god, what a bleeping rip-off. For 800 grand, you could get a nice starter mansion on Summit avenue in St. Paul.
9:03 pm
If you believe Zillow. And I happen to agree– that MG house doesn’t do it for me either. Just an example.

I used to live in Connecticut back in the early 70s. I lived way out in the country a million miles from nowhere in a little town called Ledyard. My little farm house was surrounded by 18th century stone fences and miles and miles of rolling farmland, interrupted only occasionally by jersey cows or award-winning chickens. I found out recently that the spot where I lived is now occupied by this.

Maz…that’s a softball you just tossed.
Bud jr’s idealized $800,000 house
Maz’s idealized $800,000 house
Bobby B’s idealized $800,000 house
11:11 am
You’re right actually. I prefer the Mount Curve place to the Summit ave mansion. Summit prices are based on location. Mount Curve homes actually have interesting architecture, imo.

Now this is massively hilarious!
Maz is upset that this indian brethen build a casino where he used to live!
Irony doesn’t begin to describe the situation.
11:52 am
Actually, simp, those aren’t really indians, they only play indians on tv. This casino was built when a bunch of wasichu managed to, ahem, “convince” a bunch of east coast congressmen that they deserved to have the area designated as their tribal land … which they then converted into the casino in question. Unlike other tribes who had to provide documented proof that they deserved such a designation, for some reason, this group didn’t have to. They’re about as much indian as you are, but their money spends good, as the congress-critters figured it would. Think rhode island. Think mob.

No, my ideal house is three times as big, but fifty miles further out.

You could have just called them Uncle Tom’s and been done with it.
Maz “My casino money is more pure than their casino money”
What complete bullshit!

You might want to read up on that particular chapter of history before declaring bullshit.

I noticed that it was bulit on a wetland and had an EP address, so I figured it suited bob pretty well….have fun in Litchfield.
12:29 pm
So Maz ia jealous that Skip Heyward, The ultimate uncle tom who claimed to be white but was likely indian pulled off what he didn’t have the smarts or connections to do and is now a multi-millionaire while Maz has to settle with his ~$35,000 a month.
We cry for you!
12:29 pm
My bicycle came from Litchfield! I have no idea where that place is, but there’s a “city of litchfield” license on my bike.
12:35 pm
I’d say you’re delusional simpleton but it wouldn’t do the word justice.
12:40 pm
Hmm and attack with no denial!
That usually means your very close to the truth!

Seriously, MS, I meant it – you should go read about how that all happened. There are long, interesting, and dismaying write-ups all over. You’re not doing yourself any favors here.
.
12:48 pm
Of course, I was there so that doesn’t count.
12:52 pm
“I noticed that it was bulit on a wetland . . . “

Okay, I know this is sort of inside-baseball and not really germane to your larger abstract point, (which I appreciate, as it was funny), but you’re making the wetland joke using a house that sits up top of a very steep hill, one that I don’t even try to go up in my musclecar after any kind of snowfall. If it’s wetland, it would be because it’s always in the clouds.
But, still, it was funny . . .
.
12:53 pm
Bobby,
I did go and read what happened.
This type of shit happens all the time.
I’m inured to the fact that rich connected people fuck over everyone else. Be they indian, white, black, martians.
Of course, I was there so that doesn’t count.
This is the most fallacious argument about any situation, which you tend to trot out often. Physically occupying space when something occurs does not give you detailed knowledge of what happened.

“I’m inured to the fact that rich connected people fuck over everyone else. Be they indian, white, black, martians.“

Well, we try. But my only point was that what Maz said about the situation really was correct, and that there’s quite a bit of anger in the NA community about standards of tribal proof unless you have some rich congresscritters and backers who really really want you to be NA, in which case The Lone Ranger becomes Tonto very easily.

I know someone who was something like 1/32 native and used it to get into stanford on scholarship. THAT is something to be irked about if you ask me. Hell, at this point almost anyone with family from down round oklahoma and texas has got some native blood in them (myself included), but it’s completely dishonest to try to claim that as your heritage by any means.
1:36 pm
Then you can imagine the anger of someone who is mostly fullblooded, but can’t get the right paperwork, when they see the 1/32 people (or smaller-fractioned, even) get certified for a casino.
Sore point.
.
1:47 pm
So it’s all about the money! I get it now!
It has nothing to do with heritage or identity.
I see why they are angry.
Didn’t your point align exactly with my point of Maz being angry because this guy played the system and is now fabulously wealthy?
1:50 pm
compromise has no place on an internet discussion board.
1:51 pm
“So it’s all about the money! I get it now!“

In a way you don’t mean, yeah. I’m talking about the anger of a Native American who our FedGuv refuses to recognize as a Native American, but who sees people connected with developers et al. with little or no claim to such status getting it granted quickly and easily because someone else can make BigBux off of it.
.
2:19 pm
And generally speaking, “playing the system” doesn’t usually mean bribery.
12:29 pm
Try looking in St. Louis Park, east of Hwy 100. Nice houses, good schools, good community planning & lots of kids.
12:33 pm
The school districts that rate the best academically are Edina and Wayzata. That being said, MN schools rate much higher than most states. Most of the schools in the Twin Cities are very good. The area around the Wayzata district is very suburban. The homes generally have larger lots and there are a lot of open spaces, lakes, and parks. There is a lot of development going on out there. It was mostly farmland about 15 years ago. Most of the district isn’t actually in Wayzata, it is in Plymouth. The actual town of Wayzata is very nice. It is on Lake Minnetonka (the largest lake in the metro area) and it has quaint restaurants and shops. The Edina area is a mix – some very suburban areas and some areas more like a quaint old time city neighborhood. The area of 50th and France in Edina has a lot of shops and restaurants. In both communities you can find homes in your $800k price range. There won’t be much under $300k (single family homes) and there is plenty over $1 million.
3:11 pm
I grew up in Prior Lake and loved it. LOVED it. It’s close to “the cities” yet far enough away if you would rather be in the “country” a bit. For $800K you can get a house on Prior Lake, which is a fantastic lake with gorgeous houses. It’s pretty busy, though. There are tons of new schools being built, you can have your pick between public & private. Very family-friendly, too. Downtown area is getting totally revamped.
BUT, if you love the city, Uptown Mpls. is the way to go. Either that or Linden Hills neighborhood. Anywhere in South Minneapolis around the lakes. I’m partial to Lake of the Isles, where I live now
