So this means Joe will break his ankle and tear a ligament around April, doesn’t it?

Morneau won’t be a free agent until 2010. As a result, he’s somewhat locked up. But my understanding is he turned down an offer similar to Mauer’s.
12:29 am
Mauer is smarter than he looks. With his deal up in 2010 he can leave town the same year as Boondoggle Stadium opens in East Bethel.

I wonder if the Boondoggle Dogs will be any good.

Less meat, more waste. In other words, not much different than a Dome Dog.

Stadium politics aside, viewed strictly as a baseball personnel move, it makes sense for both sides…and Aaron Gleeman explains it best.
As rare a bird as Mauer is (great catcher, great hitter for average), there are some concerns about his long term health and whether or not he could bring himself to leave MN. Johan Santana, OTOH, is the one that’s gonna be setting the new standard for new millenium baseball contracts. Good lefty starters are arguably the most important / rare commodity in the game, and he’s clearly the best one in a long time…when you look @ the deal that Barry Zito got from the SF Giants, barring some unforseen circumstance you’ve got to reckon that in 18 months Johan will get 30%-40% more…making him the highest paid pitcher ever…if the right idiot owner comes along he might even get A-Rod type money. Perhaps then he can float a loan to the Venezuelan Government.

It just makes me un-complicatedly happy.
Hurrah.

I get it from a baseball personnel standpoint. But damn it pisses me off they make so much money all the while we’re fighting over this stadium and how to pay for it.
12:12 pm
make the players pay for the stadium. they’ve got the cash.
12:17 pm
I say if a team wants a new stadium, they ought to take a season off and spend the player salary budget on the stadium. That’ll slow down this whole “We need to build a new or massively renovate the old one every 10 years, long before it’s paid off” thing.
Of course no playing means no revenue, either.

Morneau signed a one-year deal for $4.5 million (that $6M or $7M Canadian) a couple weeks before Mauer did. Morneau won’t be able to be a free agent until after 2010, but that’s MLB rules, not anything under contract. Which means the arbitration process that they just avoided.
Even with all the stadium troubles, the best argument for the Twins might be the seasons the Wolves, Vikings, U basketball, U football and maybe the Wild are turning in.

Ericam is officially an idiot.
4:39 pm
Ooh, I’ve made it at mnspeak. I’ve been called an idiot in one thread and been accused of knee-jerk liberal outrage in another. Score!
4:42 pm
Simmer down, there Erica. You were called an idiot by Steve Marsh. That doesn’t really count.
4:44 pm
Aw, Jason, let me have my moment.
4:46 pm
I don’t think you’re an idiot, Erica. I do, however, think you’re German.
5:06 pm
I was just experimenting with bolding. I mean, it’s cool if dumb chicks want to whine about how unfair baseball/life is.
7:47 pm
Now, if steve marsh called you gay, that would be something…unless you actually are.

Isn’t she a lesbo?
