Sound Unseen: It’s Gonna Blow!!!!—San Diego’s Music Underground 1986-1996

There was a time in the mid ’90s when music fans and bands and labels were looking for the next Seattle—that midsized market with a tight knit music scene and special sound that had the potential to just blow up. Some thought it was going to be MPLS + STPL, and it many ways we had our late ’80s to early ’90s golden era (that some people still go on and on about). But a lot of folks also thought the dreamy sea-side city of San Diego would dominate the national musical conversation, and money quickly rushed into their area to woo bands like Rocket from the Crypt, No Knife, Inch, and even Blink 182. Tonight the fantastic Sound Unseen series premieres It’s Gonna Blow!!!—San Diego’s Music Underground 1986-1996’, the documentary directed by Bill Perrine that chronicles the record execs’ descending into the San Diego underground looking for musical gold. 7 PM. $10. —Curt Stanski
