Midwesterners are suckers for fiction set in the midwest—we admit that we’re guilty of it, too. And that’s one of the reasons why we’re excited to hear selections from Nickolas Butler’s Shotgun Lovesongs. The setting, the heart of Wisconsin farmland, itself becomes one of the main characters in the national bestseller’s story. The other reason we’re excited is that the tale sounds very similar to the plot of the film Beautiful Girls: Four men who were friends as juniors regroup in the town they grew up in (for a wedding, not high school reunion) to find their relationships have grown and changed and have become challenged, just like their statuses of adulthood.
