Rain Taxi and Graywolf Press present two big time, acclaimed poets reading from their latest works. Mary Jo Bang’s A Doll for Throwing follows a Bauhaus-era speaker who witnessed the school’s shuttering by the Nazis in 1933, and speaker—as a person and construct—gives voice to the conditions of both time periods: nostalgia, xenophobia, and political extremism. Stephanie Burt’s Advice from the Lights asks: How do any of us achieve adulthood? And why would we want to, if we had the choice? Burt’s meditative original poems take on politics, childhood, gender identity, parenthood, desire, pop music, and more. Definitely stick around for the reception, where the local lit scene will bust it out. Wednesday, February 21, 7 PM. $5.
