Celebrating an entire century requires a special kind of party, and the Minneapolis Art Institute are going big for their 100 Year birthday celebration in 2015! Not only did the Institute just make a major announcement—that pieces from one of the most important privately held collections of modern American art will be on display all year as American Modernism: Selections from the Kunin Collection—but that there will be new events at the MIA every week for all of 2015. And what better place to start a birthday party than the cake? This weekend check out “MasterPieces of Cake” inspired by the MIA’s collection featuring artful cake creations by Patisserie 46Hanisch Bakery and CoffeeQueen of CakesAngel Food Bakery & Coffee BarCopper Hen Cakery & KitchenPatrick’s Bakery & CaféGrandma’s Bakery, and Agra Culture Kitchen & Press. There’s also a New Year’s Weekend Brunch and bloody mary bar, hosted by Agra Culture, and it’s also the last chance to check out the wildly popular Italian Style: Fashion Since 1945 exhibit before it closes (with up to 40% on select Italian fashion books, merchandise, and one-of-a-kind vintage accessories at the store). There’s even surprise music and theater performances this weekend by the Twin Cities Gay Men’s Chorus and Savage Umbrella. The event itself is free, but you’ll need a ticket for the brunches and special exhibition. Happy birthday, let’s party! Friday, Saturday, Sunday. Free. —Willis Cuomo
