Friday-Saturday: Camino Real at Minneapolis Theatre Garage
Girl Friday Productions doesn’t have regular performance seasons. They don’t own a theater, and they’re not out to make a profit. They’re a little like a pop-up production company, drawing talent from the Twin Cities metro together every other year to bring a critically acclaimed, underperformed play to life on stage for one month only. “Bring to life” might be an understatement, as their last play, Street Scene, took home honors from the Ivey Awards (think Tony’s of the Twin Cities).
This time around, Girl Friday has chosen Camino Real, a little-known Tennessee Williams play. Ben McGovern directs, fresh off his Guthrie production of An Illiad, and many Girl Friday regulars returned in the Cast and Creative Team (Kirby Bennett, Eric Knutson, and former GF director Craig Johnson take part). It’s a fantastical story, using classic literary characters to explore the meaning of fate—and of life, in the end. A daunting undertaking, but Girl Friday is up to the challenge. Shows run through July 27. 7:30 p.m. $20. –EK
