It was the early 80s in Germany, and musicians, bands, painters were renewing a DIY artistic spirit in both sides of a split country. The brief Geniale Dilletanten (Brilliant Dilletantes) movement shone as brightly as it did quickly—and by brightly we mean darkly, since subculture was a black-clad punk art scene, complete with vinyl jackets and eye liner. Celebrate the dilletantes with the Germanic Institute’s new exhibition, and don your German 80s punk looks for the opening night; The party showcases special film screenings, experimental music samples, curated sounds by DJ ESP, surprise performers, and more. Friday, November 2nd, 6-9 PM. Free.Tracy Oxford
