If you haven’t checked out the new Common Good Books, here’s your chance. The new Macalester-adjacent location has been up and running for awhile, but the official spring opening kicks off today with HRH Keillor in attendance. Join Keillor for a tour of the store after a night of open mic, poetry-free-for-all at nearby Weyerhauser Memorial Chapel on campus. The following two nights include a reading from Keillor’s new book and a chance for audience members to tell Keillor a story for a change.
The move to Mac is a bit of a homecoming for Keillor, whose first ever Prairie Home Companion show took place in the college’s auditorium. But we have to admit, we’re a little sad to see the old bookstore go. Perched on Cathedral Hill but tucked into the stone bowels of a beautiful clay-red, old-timer building, Common Good’s previous home was completely St. Paul. Now brighter, bigger, better, the updated CG is still thoroughly St. Paul with the greatest cheese shop right around the corner. And we love that, since opening, the new location has had a full schedule of readings and author talks, meaning plenty more opportunities to take in a local treasure. 7 p.m. Free. –LB
