Unlike the boozier Books & Bars, the Artful Book Club takes a quieter approach to literary discussion, if equally thoughtful. Its membership draws a different crowd too, choosing tomes that carry some artistic insight: biographies, memoirs, even books on the process of creation. This month’s pick, and tonight’s topic of discussion, is “Still Life with Oysters and Lemon” by Mark Doty. It’s a slim edition but by no means a breezy read; heavy with artful prose, the book ties in elements of memoir as Doty explores artistic creation, spiritualism, and the essence of beauty in life and death. Weighty topics for sure, but Doty will have you wanting more after you taste his poetic writing style. Whether or not you make it to Hopkins for some like-minded discussion is up to you, but this book is a can’t-miss. 6:30 p.m. Free. —EK
