America the Beautiful: The Monumental Landscape of Clyde Butcher
The exhibition - on display at both St. Paul Public Library and the James J Hill Reference Library, both on Rice Park - consists of 50 large-scale black and white photographs of the American landscape, spanning beautiful sites across the United States, from the coast of Maine, to the Badlands, to Hawaii. The exceptional size of Butcher's compositions – the largest being 5 by 9 feet – allows viewers to experience the landscapes in all their power. The photographs capture the great public lands of the United States which Butcher, an avid conservationist, aims to preserve through his art. See http://www.clydebutcher.com for examples. Presented with the support of the Friends of the St. Paul Public Library, MELSA, and Exhibits Development Group, in part with money from the 2008 referendum directed to Minnesota's arts and cultural heritage.
