Walker 'Rock Out' event featuring The Suicide Commandos
We bet back in 1984, locally grown punk rock legends the Suicide Commandos never thought they'd be performing at a "family friendly" function. Well, times change, and things that were once radical become iconic, as opposed to offensive. And the angsty teens that fell in love with hard-hitting music and counter-culture back in the day have since turned into adults with open minds -- and that's what the Walker is banking on today with their Free First Saturday "Rock Out" event. In conjunction with the newly opened Dan Graham exhibit, which itself practically vibrates with artistic rebellion, today's Family oriented event ties in the concepts of Graham's phenomenal work with activities revolving around architecture and rock n' roll. Catch performances and rock history lessons by the Commandos at both 11am and 1pm; participate in art making activities; and even sit in on a storytime session with Punk Farm author Jarret Krosoczka as he reads his tale about a five-piece punk band consisting of, you guessed it, farm animals. Despite all these "family" shenanigans, the Commando's also keep in mind their non-kid-having fan base today, with a special late-night acoustic performance at the Dakota Jazz Club at 11pm. Mayor R.T. Ryback has officially proclaimed today "Suicide Commandos Day," which we think is a pretty darn cool first order of business after re-election. The WAC "Rock Out" event runs from 10am-3pm and is free and open to the public; the Dakota Jazz Club event kicks off at 11pm and is $10 at the door.
