In these trying times, when page views can mean the life or death of a publication, many online newspapers are resorting to disruptive practices to increase numbers without considering the overall user experience. However, according to Ed Kohler — better know as (and for) The Deets — “they may also be driving away some of their most loyal readers as they become fed up with jumping through more and more hoops with no additional benefits.” (Kohler echoes Marco Arment’s Nov. 8 post about paginated articles.)

How do you feel about having to open multiple pages in order to read a full story? Certainly, one of the benefits of online news is the ease with which stories can include referential links to relevant news and/or back stories. But is this being abused when the so-called links are simply a continuation of the story, necessary for a clean read?

Let’s be fair, though, if we’re going to dis this practice, then what’s the solution to secure the publications’ survival. And let’s be honest, haven’t newspapers been taking these kinds of measures, in one form or another, since their inception? Let’s talk supplements, supplements, supplements. Let’s talk page jumps. Weren’t we just as annoyed having to flip through page after page to continue reading?

But more importantly (in that kind of ego-centric way to which we’ve all grown accustomed), what does this say about MNSpeak? The links certainly don’t gain us any page views, so the intention is good, but the format is certainly based on having to go to multiple pages to get a full story. Is this too disruptive? Or is this beautifully exploiting the power of the web?

Today is the big day. (Or is it?) In an effort to thwart Democratic leaders’ efforts to lock down votes for the health care reform bill, Minnesota Representative Michele Bachmann will be rallying her troops on the steps of the Capitol (Washington) at noon.

In appealing to demonstrators, Ms. Bachmann called the health care vote, tentatively scheduled for this Saturday, the “Super Bowl of freedom.” She has repeatedly accused Democrats of pursuing “socialized medicine” and a “government takeover” of the health care system.

Does this large-scale media moment have anything to do with the recent resignation of Bachmann’s top aide, Michelle Marston? Bachmann’s Mad Hatter reputation may be scaring away staffers.

What kind of support will Bachmann garner today? On Wednesday, Fox News estimated a crowd of 64,000 — but then this is the same Fox News that substantially overestimated (by almost a million) the 9/12 tea party crowd, and the same Fox News that reduced the 1900-page bill to “five pages that matter.” (Still, a quick Internet search shows a fair number of people — primarily East Coast — looking for a ride.)

One person we know will be there for sure is actor Jon Voight, who just left Minnesota last night, after speaking at a fundraiser for Gov. Pawlenty.

Meanwhile, the Stand Up America PAC, an anti-right-wing-extremist organization, has spent the last two days trying to raise $10,000 in order to “ruin Michele Bachmann’s day” by proving they can rally just as much support against her as she can rally against the health care legislation. A noble (or at least peaceful) counter-attack? Or a cheap way of raising much needed funds (that will in no way benefit health care reform)?

While we hope and expect users to freely state their opinions, we ask that it be done respectfully.

These are some common-sense guidelines that will be enforced by Secrets of the City editors:

Please do not spam. Do not create unwanted, repetitive, or off-topic content, including comments and private messages.

Respect copyright. Please do not publish any private-license content that does not belong to you. Quoting is fine as long as it’s brief and links to the original source.

Submit appropriate content. Do not submit content that is infringing, libelous, defamatory, obscene, pornographic, violent, abusive, or profane.

No predatory behavior. Stalking, harassment, threats, privacy invading, or the revealing of other users’ personal information will not be tolerated. Secrets of the City will ban anyone doing any of the above.

No hate speech. You may not degrade the humanity of any person or group of people. Hate speech attacks a group based on race or ethnic origin, disability, gender, age, or sexual orientation/gender identity.

If you feel that one of these guidelines have been violated, please email the editor a link to the content in question or contact us at abuse [at] secretsofthecity [dot] com. The violation of any of the above guidelines may result in account suspension or permanent ban.

Thanks.

It’s been almost a year since we merged MNSpeak and The Rake into Secrets of the City. Our goal was for the content of both sites to complement each other, but it ended up being a bit clunky, especially on the MNSpeak side. So we tried again. Michael Amundson designed and built the site in WordPress. We’re still working on getting the last few features working, but feel free to log in and play around. All existing user accounts should work. Check out the new and improved entertainment/restaurant/happy hour database. Discuss here if you have any issues or comments. All Rake archives and old blogs will be moved to a stand-alone site when we launch. Enjoy. Note: Any content created during the beta will be wiped out when we launch (soon).

Last week, a local PR firm sent out a bunch of email to local bloggers to inform them of a video of an obviously computer generated vine creeping up the IDS tower. It doesn’t look like many blogs responded, although The Deets offers his own commentary on the video, asking if this sort of viral marketing isn’t counterproductive, as it involves an element of deception: Stunts can be a fun way to get attention. Lying to people to get them to pay attention is idiotic. “PR 2.0″ messages from companies like this boil down to: “We lied to you to get you to pay attention, but now believe us when we tell you what we’d like you to hear.”
